It seems that the entire world is finally realising the environmental consequences of our “first world” lifestyle. After decades of slow progress, the push for alternatives to things we take for granted is rapidly escalating. All types of waste are now undesirable, so any initiatives to make a difference are welcome.

Householders are doing their part by seeking better ways to do things and solutions are appearing in the most surprising places. Take the family bathroom, for example. It is a challenging environment at the best of times, so can it be kept clean and in good condition by using organic materials and products?

At Budget Shower Screens, we have installed screens and mirrors both as part of a renovation project and in new dwellings. Many of our shower screens are now installed in bathrooms with a touch of organics, so the movement is gaining momentum.

Organic Materials for the Bathroom – Tea Tree Oil

If we had to choose eight items that would be effective in a bathroom, we would start with cleaning products. In a humid climate like ours, mould is a constant enemy, but instead of using chemical-based cleaners, try tea tree oil. Place a teaspoon with one cup of water in a spray bottle, shake well, spray, leave for a few minutes and wipe away the mould.

Eucalyptus Oil and Bamboo Cloths

Eucalyptus oil is an excellent disinfectant and deodoriser, perfect for cleaning the toilet and hand basin. Soak a cloth in a mix of organic detergent, hot water and a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil and wipe over the surfaces. Now that cleaning cloths have been mentioned, 100% natural bamboo cloths are available that pick up dirt and remove stains.

Vinegar a Natural Cleaner

Vinegar is another natural product that doubles as an efficient cleaner. For normal dirt removal, combine hot water, organic detergent, vinegar and borax in a jug, fill it with water, stir then pour into a spray bottle. Spray dirty surfaces and wipe clean. To remove stubborn soap scum on shower screens, spray plain undiluted white vinegar onto the surface and wipe off with a cloth.

Essential Oils to Soak Away Stress

To create a relaxed mood while bathing away the day’s cares, essential oils are a natural way to de-stress. Lavender is known for its calming qualities, but there are many other types, so choose what suits you, and not a chemical in sight.

Bamboo Toothbrushes, Towels and Plants

Ditch plastic toothbrushes; try those made of bamboo with medium and soft bristles. Bathroom towels and bathmats are also available in bamboo in soft, fashionable colours. Place a plant that likes a warm, humid environment in a prominent spot and you will have eight organic items to keep your bathroom looking smart.
